*** Slope Rating & Handicapping System

The New Zealand Golf Association has recently announced the Launch Date of the US Slope Rating & Handicapping system in New Zealand as 1st September 2000.

The US handicapping system, often referred to as the Slope system, will be available for all Registered golf players, on Affiliated golf club courses.

The NZGA reports that the Course Rating teams, are near the end of rating all affiliated golf courses, and the NZGN, New Zealand Golf Network, is in extensive final testing, and is close to being ready to commence the loading of all master information on courses and players.

After detailed research and local trials, commencing in 1994, the NZGA has established that this handicapping method best suits the El Nino weather conditions now being experienced in New Zealand. The Slope system best reflects the differences experienced by scratch players compared to bogey players (around 18 handicap) in the varying conditions of hot dry summers and wet lush winters.

It will take out the wild fluctuations in handicaps, producing a more stable smooth movement in your handicap, better reflecting the changes in conditions from summer to winter, and the changes in your game.

What is more, the Slope System is more portable between courses, taking into account the differing difficulties of each course. This portability will be shown even further next year, when Slope Handicaps created in New Zealand will be able to be used in many other countries, and overseas players will be able to use their Slope System Handicaps in New Zealand.

The NZGA will be distributing an explanatory newsletter to all registered players within a few weeks, and GoforGOLF will supply helpful information on our website leading up to the introduction.

GoforGOLF thanks Fred Henderson, convenor of NZGA's handicapping and course rating committee, for his time and consideration, and congratulates Fred and the NZGA on their decision to take on such an extensive project.

*** GoforGOLF

GoforGOLF are completing the necessary changes to enable both the present and the Slope system to be used for entering your scorecards, and receiving and recording corrected scores and stableford results.

This will mean that for our American, Canadian and European players who use GoforGOLF, you will have the ability to enter your scores using your Handicap Index and Course Handicap.

For Non Slope countries, including New Zealand participants, you will be able to continue to use your same Standard Handicap as at present on GoforGOLF, knowing that the Slope handicapping system is available when the changeover takes place.

*** For the Players

What does the introduction of the Slope system mean for you, the players. I have done extensive research, and have established that although it is a huge project for a national golf association to undertake to set up the Slope system, in a country, for the players, very little changes, except for the benefits.

These being, in brief, a more consistent handicap, less prone to wild fluctuations, and more responsive to differing conditions and difficulty of golf courses. Add to this the portability within New Zealand and Overseas, and you have a much improved system.

GoforGOLF will bring you updates of progress, and information and explanations of the Slope system, as they come to hand.

*** For the Inquisitive

There are a number of web sites that have information on the Slope system. These include simple overviews and historical articles, through to detailed explanations with full formulas etc. The USGA website has their Slope Manual online.

Try these:

*** HandiTIPS

Course Finder - Our course finder is a multi level finder. The New Zealand, USA and Australian locations are firstly broken down into golfing districts, following as close as possible the NZGA competition districts for New Zealand and States for Australia and USA, then secondly; each district has a further breakdown to particular cities and towns. (These are inset from the golf districts by ' . . . ' ). Selecting the golf district will display all courses in that district or state, including those in the towns. Select a town, and you will only see the courses in that town.

Going on holiday, select the town you are visiting and see the choice of courses you have close by.

Remember - Your handicap and password can be changed at any time.

Hope this helps you enjoy your golf.

Email me on . . . greg@goforgolf.com . . . and I will help you with any problems you may have with registering and entering your scorecards and courses.

REMEMBER the more scorecards you enter, the better the analysis you will receive from GoforGOLF.
