GoforGOLF . . . NEWSLETTER THIRTY THREE . . . GoforGOLF
Newsletter Number 33 from GoforGOLF Approaching our fourth year and with thousands of scorecards entered ************************************************************************ IN THIS ISSUE *** The US Tours becomes more International *** Competition Winner *** Holes in One and Eagles *** WIN Jack Newton's Putting Partner *** HandiTIPS *** Suggestions, Questions and Comments *** More Sports Links *** Devotion ************************************************************************ *** The US Tours becomes more International While the European Tour has always been international, made up of all the European countries and spreading through to Asia, and Australasia, add to that the announcement by John Daley that he is going to concentrate on the European Tour, and you add another US player to the mix of countries like Iceland, Myanmar, Brazil, Venezuela and South Africa, and of course all the European continent. But now, the US Tour is becoming international as well, with players from 20 countries, Canada 4, Japan 3, Sweden 3, South Africa 7, Spain 3, Argentina 2, England, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Trinidad & Tobago, Paraguay, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Korea, Fiji all with 1, Australia 11 and from little New Zealand 5 in 2002. New Zealanders, Michael Long $12,594 and Grant Waite $46,480 have got away to a slow start, while Craig Perks $246,419 has had 5 pay days from 5 starts and Phil Tataurangi $209,900 4 from 4. Craig started with a 15th at the Phoenix Open, and now a tie for 5th at the Genuity, and Phil a 5th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Luckless Frank Nobilo has missed the cut each start so far and by only one shot in the last three tournaments. However, still with overwhelming numbers it is hard to keep US players out of the stats. From the 2001 stats, obviously Tiger's the lowest scorer at 68.81 ave., John Daley Drive Distance at 306.7 yards ave., Phil Mickelson top at Birdies, Eagles and all-round. You have to add drive accuracy to drive distance to get a non American player, Sergio Garcia, and look to South Africa for David Frost to pip Phil Mickelson for putting. Still with more and more International players on the US Tour I suspect we will see more in the stats in 2002. I had an excellent tee shot . . . I looked at my next shot and was undecided whether I should use the 3 wood as it could go anywhere. It was only after I hit it that 1 and my partner, Roger, realised I had absolutely smoked it. When I got to the green it was only a metre away from the cup. The rest was history in the making, my very first" Bob recounts, "The 9th at Whangaroa is a short par 4 of 230 metres. It is driveable on most days, and on this particular day it was a 3 wood to about 30 feet and a good putt". David Henry tells us, "I teed off with a 3 wood and drove to the 135 mark. Second shot (8 iron) was short 5 inches from the front causing the ball to roll back down the slope 3 to 4 metres. At this point I thought I had blown my birdie chance, and pulled out my sandwedge. To my delight the ball went straight in to the hole - my first eagle !!" And Kevin from last month tells us, "Decided to have a go at the green with the Great Big Bertha (I only have one wood), it stayed straight with a slight fade and ended up pin high and 10 feet to the right. Sunk the putt and said 'You beauty (adjectives deleted)'" Congratulations to all successful GoforGOLFers. No batteries required. Adjustable power control delivers the ball right back to your feet. 3 entry zones allow you to fine tune your putting. *** Answer these two questions to be in the draw *** for a Jack Newton Putting Partner The lead into the first Major at Augusta is hotting up with the top players starting to appear at the top of the leaderboards. Steve Elkington, Vijay Singh, Paul Azinger, Jasper Parnevik and Nick Price to name a few. At the Genuity Championship at the Doral course in Florida - 1st to 4th March 2002 - two more were putting on a great finish. One of the greats went into the last round with an 8 shot lead and held onto a par round after setting the pace with 66, 67 and 66, while the other great put on a startling final round of 6 under par, getting as close as 1 shot behind. Answer these two simple questions, a) Who won the 2002 Genuity Championship ? b) Who was second at the 2002 Genuity Championship ? TO ENTER - CLICK on the banner advert on the GoforGOLF website http://www.goforgolf.co.nz or go direct to the entry form at http://www.goforgolf.co.nz/contest.asp The winners will be drawn from the correct entries by the management of Sports Information Management Ltd. A Circled Score As I have had a number of enquiries regarding what a Circled Score is on GoforGOLF, I thought I would cover it in the HandiTIPS. A Circled Score occurs in non-competition golf when you hit too many shots on a hole, and to keep the game moving, you pick up your ball. You would estimate what you might have scored, and circle it on your card to indicate it is not the real score. This will then be taken into account by the club handicapper. In GoforGOLF, when entering your score, tick the 'Circled' box. GoforGOLF will then include zero stableford points for that hole, and will calculate your 'corrected score'. This 'corrected score' is based on your handicap and the Rating for that hole, and is the score you would have needed to shoot to have achieved one stableford point. If you are still unsure, I would suggest you discuss it with your club professional. Etiquette - It is good etiquette, when not playing in a competition, to pick up your ball when you have strayed, and cannot score any stableford points. This is to keep the game moving and not hold up the groups behind you. (BUT Remember . . . don't pick up your ball if you are competing in an official or club competition). 3. PHOTO Gallery Photos from the 2002 NZ Open and of Tiger Woods' visit are still displayed in our CHIPS Photo Gallery http://www.goforgolf.co.nz/nzopen.tiger.asp 4.
