I couldn't help notice, while watching the PGA Championship, how many players lean on their putters when retrieving their ball from the hole. Yes, they all seem to do it, even Tiger. I know I have been guilty of this myself, and wonder how much damage it does each time, and how many putts I may have made, had the ball not run down the groove that was left by the players in the groups in front. Then again, is it better to go down on ones haunches, with all your weight on your toes. Does this do even more damage? Should we bend or squat? __________________________________________________________ *** COMPETITION WINNER Congratulations to the winner of our August competition. This month's winner is from the Waitemata Golf Club on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. Your prize of a 2002 Edition of GOLF RULES ILLUSTRATED . . . will be on its way to you shortly. __________________________________________________________ *** HOLES IN ONE and EAGLES No Holes in One but plenty of Eagles 7 Aug Sand Martins Golf Club 18th Yellow Tee Berkshire, UK 8 Aug Beedles Lake Golf Club 5th Yellow Tee Leicestershire, UK 10 Aug Duck Creek Golf Club 3rd Blue Tee Pauatahuni, NZ - Arwel Thomas 15 Aug Bavarian Hills Golf Course 18th White Tee Pennsylvania, USA 22 Aug Bear Creek golf Club 11th Black Tee Missouri, USA 25 Aug Westport Golf Club 8th Blue Tee Westland, NZ 26 Aug Chisholm Park Golf Club 17th Terracota Tee Dunedin, NZ Arwel tells us, "it was a nine iron from about 130 metres, during an Interclub match, which I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory". See more details on the website. *** Answer these two questions to be in the draw *** The WORST-CASE SCENARIO Survival Handbook: GOLF With the Majors all over, we now await the Ryder Cup, postponed from last year after the September 11 2001 terrorist attack on New York. The teams are the same as chosen for the 2001 tournament, so it has been interesting to see that the US players have been performing better than the European players. Then again, this weekend, 28 Aug to 1 Set, the Europeans started to show out, while the USA team members were not so prominent. Check out the latest results in our Slice o' NEWS section http://www.goforgolf.com/sliceonews.asp Answer these two simple questions, a) Name the Winner of the 2002 BMW Int'l Open ? b) Name the Winner of the 2002 Air Canada Championship ? TO ENTER - CLICK on the banner advert or menu item on GoforGOLF http://www.goforgolf.co.nz or go direct to the entry form at http://www.goforgolf.co.nz/contest.asp The winners will be drawn from the correct entries by the management of Sports Information Management Ltd. The results will be final. (and there is the usual the small print?) No correspondence or discussion will be entered into. __________________________________________________________ *** HandiTIPS 1. HELP - We have rewritten the GoforGOLF HELP This should assist you to use the New Look GoforGOLF. Let us know if any area needs more work. Email greg@goforgolf.com 2. CIRCLED Scores A circled score takes place when you pick up you ball before completing the hole. This may be termed differently in other countries. In mine, when you pick up your ball on a hole, you normally enter a circled or adjusted score, for handicapping purposes. (The adjusted score entered is the score based on your handicap and the rating of the particular hole, that you would have needed to score to obtain one stableford point, while you actually receive zero stableford points). In GoforGOLF I suggest you enter an estimated score for the hole. An estimate of what you might have scored if you had continued. This is so that your score record is completed. Then tick the 'Circle' box for the hole when entering your score. GoforGOLF will then include zero stableford points, and calculated your 'corrected' score stated above. It is this 'corrected score' that is used for handicapping purposes. Etiquette - When playing a friendly game, it is considered good etiquette to pick up your ball if you have strayed, so that you do not hold up the groups behind. (Remember . . . don't pick up your ball if you are competing in an official stroke play competition). 3. ASSOCIATE Players - Clubs, Teachers and Coaches !!! Use GoforGOLF to create a record and track the progress of your pupils and/or teams. Register as your teams name, e.g. Pennants A Team 2002 Enter your team members as 'Associates' Get them to record them scores and statistic, using the 'Analysis Card' option on the course menu. Load these scores for each member, and you will be able to analyse their scores. This will also encourage them to analyse their own scores, stated by Tiger Woods as a large component of a successful golfer. 4. Associates Record - Is not lost. When they leave your team or school, they can register for GoforGOLF and their score and golf record will go with them. __________________________________________________________ *** SUGGESTIONS, QUESTIONS & COMMENTS Suggestions, questions and comments are welcomed.
