GoforGOLF . . . NEWSLETTER FORTY SIX . . . GoforGOLF
Newsletter Number 46 from GoforGOLF In our fourth year and with thousands of scorecards entered and courses from over 45 countries. You are welcome to pass this newsletter on to friends. ************************************************************************ IN THIS ISSUE *** The Ladies *** Competition Winners *** Holes in One and Eagles *** WIN TWO Dozen Premium Golf Balls *** HandiTIPS *** Suggestions, Questions and Comments *** More Golf & Sports Links *** The Finesse Shot ************************************************************************ *** THE LADIES While Annika Sorenstam again shows her exceptional talent, leading the Office Depot Championship, the GoforGOLF ladies have been setting the pace with two Holes in One in March. Brenda Malone has been a supporter of GoforGOLF from the early days and now has over 250 scorecards entered in our database. Congratulations to you and the other GoforGOLFers who have scored a Hole in One or Eagle. Twelve months after Craig Perks astounded us with his finish in the Tour Players Championship, he showed us again that he has the ability, with a great effort and a good finish. He has commented on the difficulty of coping with the instant fame of his first win being such a top event, and the hard work he has undertaken to get his form back this year. We wish him well for the up coming Masters, along with his fellow Kiwis. And talking of the Masters, isn't it great that the old guys convinced the committee to allow them to continue to exercise their lifetime exemption, so that we will once more see the greats, Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead walk the Augusta fairways. Greg Paul __________________________________________________________ *** COMPETITION NO correct entry for the March Spot the Ball JACKPOT JACKPOT JACKPOT The prize Jackpots to TWO dozen Premium Brand Golf Balls. See below for details. __________________________________________________________ *** HOLES IN ONE and EAGLES Holes in One in March The Ladies do it. 17th Mar Troon Darley Golf Club 9th Blue Tee Scotland, UK 30th Mar Sanctuary Cove - Pines Course 7th Red Tee Queensland - Brenda Malone An excited Brenda tells us, "I said to my partner as I took out my 6 iron that I would try to hit a straight shot because so many of my shots there end up pin high on the right hand fringe. The pin on Monday was dead centre of the green. I hit first and was pleased to see my ball heading high and straight at the pin, it dropped down about 6 feet to the front left of the pin, and I bent down to pick up my tee and stopped looking. (How dumb was that!!)" And more GoforGOLF Eagles, 3rd Mar Townsville Golf Club 8th White Tee David Dance 16th Mar South Head Golf Club 6th Blue Tee Darren Mathers 26th Mar Lansdown Golf Club 4th Yellow Tee 31st Mar Townsville Golf Club 8th White Tee Yes the same Guy David wrote, "I hit a 320m drive right down the middle of the fairway. My second shot landed on the front of the green and ran up towards the hole. On reaching the green I had a two inch put for eagle. Only two more inches for an albatross. Maybe another day." Darren recounts, "Well, it was rather funny. I had hit a good drive but unfortunately left myself with a downhill lie and in an old divot. I had a 4 iron in my hand which I knew was plenty of club to get me to the green. I hit a terrible shot and topped it. I then pulled out my sand iron. I had about 100m to the green, The greens were quite soft at the moment so I knew that I had to pitch the ball past the pin. I hit the shot. I had been joking up the hole about how I need to use a hard ball because I get too much spin playing with a Pro V. The ball landed about 20 feet passed the hole, took one hop and then spun back and into the hole." Congratulations to all successful GoforGOLFers. (Our promise of confidentiality does not allow us to publish your names, without your permission - let us know if you make a hole in one, eagle or albatross). _________________________________________________________ *** APRIL COMPETITION This month the prize is sponsored by the Golf Update Magazine TWO . . . SLOPE RATING GoforGOLF has been written to enable scores to be entered 'with or without' using the Slope Rating System. If you are from a country that uses the Slope Rating System, check that you have ticked the box in your details to ensure that GoforGOLF automatically calculates your 'Course Handicap' from your 'Handicap Index'. Sign In, as if to enter a scorecard, then click the 'Change your Details' button on the green menu. Then ensure there is a tick in the 'Use Slope Rating System for score entry?' box. Click to Tick. 2. Local Rules We draw your attention to the Local Rules at your club. The Local Rules are official rules for golf played at that course and are to be read in conjunction with the Royal & Ancient and USPGA Rules. They are usually displayed on a notice board close to the first tee. The Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, has abundant animal and bird life on the course. The crowned plover "Kiewietjie" (found on the club's logo) nests on or near the fairways and can become quite aggressive should you come too close to its eggs or young. The ground staff place small red flags next to their nests to warn you to stay away. They have a special Local Rule: "Any ball coming to rest within 2 club lengths of a plover's nest, may be lifted and dropped without penalty". http://www.humewoodgolf.co.za/19th.htm Take a note of your club's Local Rules each game. 3.
