GoforGOLF . . . NEWSLETTER FIFTY TWO . . . GoforGOLF

Newsletter Number 52 from GoforGOLF ************************************************************************ NOW In our FIFTH year and with 23,000 scorecards entered and courses from over 46 countries . . . and growing by the day. You are welcome to pass this newsletter on to friends. ************************************************************************ IN THIS ISSUE *** Crunch Month *** Competition Winners *** Holes in One and Eagles *** WIN ONE Dozen Premium Golf Balls *** HandiTIPS *** Suggestions, Questions and Comments *** More Golf & Sports Links *** Rules of Golf ************************************************************************ *** Crunch Month The next month is when the tour winners, and tour loosers are determined. In the US, we have a close tussle between Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Davis Love III at the head of the numbers, and with Jesper Parnevic, Billy Andrade and Pat Bates on the 125 cut, and Per-Ulrik Johansson, Mark O'Meara, Craig Perks and Phil Tataurangi amongst others needing some good results. In Europe, the Volvo order of Merit, has Ernie Els with a tight grip from Darren Clarke then Ian Poulter. I don't know what the cut is for Europe, but Michael Campbell, Peter Fowler, Steven Scahill and Peter O'Malley look safe, however Greg Turner is in 125th. For the ladies, Annika Sorenstam leads from Se Ri Pak and Grace Park in USA and Sophie Gustafson from Elisabeth Esteri then Laura Davies in Europe, with Lynnette Brokky in 5th and Gina Scott in 15th. 111 consecutive cuts An Update on Tigers consecutive cuts record is that he has not played since the last newsletter and although he is in the WGC American Express Championship there is no cut in this tournament so probably doesn't count. Further to that is that he has one the Amex Champs by two shots giving his caddie, Kiwi Steve Williams his 100th win as a Pro Caddie. We will have to keep watching. "Tiger has now achieved 111 consecutive cuts, just two away from Byron Nelson's Record 113". Keep an eye on our "Slice of News" section of GoforGOLF to know when Tiger is competing next . . . we will bring it to you as soon as we know. http://www.goforgolf.com/a_sliceonews.asp AND a welcome to the group from Denmark who have joined GoforGOLF over the last week or so. We hope you enjoy the facilities of our website, and that it helps your enjoyment of golf. I do invite and encourage you to send me your views on my comments to email greg@goforgolf.com Greg Paul __________________________________________________________ *** COMPETITION The winner of the September Spot the Ball is Alan Wilkes from Richmond. The prize of one dozen Premium Brand Golf Balls will be on their way to the winner shortly. Apology - A mix up meant we missed the August winner from the last newsletter. The winner was Brian Pearce. We only have an email address, so if you haven't received your prize yet, please contact Golf Update or myself. See below for details of the October Spot the Ball Contest. __________________________________________________________ *** HOLES IN ONE and EAGLES No Holes in One in September but lots of Eagles 4th Sep Clarksville Country Club 14th White Tee 9th Sep Bamburgh Castle Golf Club 17th White Tee Philip Brantingham - UK 13th Sep Royal Hobart Golf Club 9th Blue Tee 13th Sep Brighton Golf Course 18th White Tee 28th Sep Murray Downs Golf & C C 18th Ladies Tee Kathy Scott - Swan Hill - Australia 28th Sep Clarksville Country Club 13th White Tee Philip recounts, "The course has the magnificant backdrop of the Bamburgh Castle. The 17th is a short par 4 from an elevated tee. Hit a 5 wood well that continued to roll online for the hole but stopping only 18 inches short of going in". Philip also adds, "It has to be one of the most picturesque courses in the country (not having a bias). From the 15th tee it is possible to see 5 northumbrian castles as well as the tidal coastal inlet of Budal Bay. Views out into the north sea, of the Fame Islands and Holy Island". My comment, what a place to play golf . . Kathy tells us, "In a nut shell . . . it was a reasonable drive and then a seven wood to the green . . . and a week later I still can't believe it went in the hole". From last month William Thomson, Dunblane New Golf Club, tells us: "Aged 56 - Advances in technology of golfing equipment has kept pace with my advancing years and I have managed to maintain a handicap of 6 or 7 for the last 30+ years. The 18th hole at Dunblane New Golf Club is a fairly straightforward hole which is treelined as you approach the green. 445 yards. I hit a good dive down the middle of the fairway and knew I was within reaching distance of the green. Our fourball game had already been won by that time and I decided to go for the green with my driver. I hit it well to about 15 feet from the hole and I then sank the putt". Congratulations to all successful GoforGOLFers. (Our promise of confidentiality does not allow us to publish your names, without your permission - let us know if you make a hole in one, eagle or albatross). _________________________________________________________ *** OCTOBER COMPETITION This month the prize is sponsored by the Golf Update Magazine ONE Dozen Premium Brand Golf Balls " SPOT the BALL " To enter the contest, enter the coordinates of the position you think the ball is. Entering a NEW Course - STROKE Many terms in golf vary from country to country. When entering a new course into GoforGOLF the term 'Stroke' is often missinterpreted as your first course. However, it is necessary to enter the course, before you are able to enter your score. The term 'Stroke' refers to 'Stroke Index' which is often referred to as 'Handicap' on many scorecards. This is the rating of the hole between 1 and 18, where 1 is the hardest hole, and 18 is the easiest. Each hole must have a unique stroke. Don't get this confused with PAR, also know as Par Rating, which is the number a shots a zero handicap player is expected to take on that hole, usually from 3 to 5. 2. CIRCLED Scores Similarly, there is often confusion over the Circled Score function. A circled score takes place when you pick up you ball before completing the hole. Etiquette - If playing a friendly game, it is considered good etiquette to pick up your ball if you have strayed, so that you do not hold up the groups behind. In my country, when you pick up your ball on a hole, you normally enter a circled or adjusted score, for handicapping purposes. (The adjusted score entered is the score based on your handicap and the rating of the particular hole, that you would have needed to score to obtain one stableford point, while you actually receive zero stableford points). In GoforGOLF I suggest you enter an estimated score for the hole. An estimate of what you might have scored if you had continued. This is so that your score record is completed. Then tick the 'Circle' box for the hole when entering your score. GoforGOLF will then include zero stableford points, and calculated your 'corrected' score stated above. It is this 'corrected score' that is used for handicapping purposes. (Remember . . . don't pick up your ball if you are competing in an official stroke play competition). 3. Entering a TEST score You are welcome to enter a Test score in GoforGOLF to see what it can do for you, and how it will react to a certain circumstance or input. However, PLEASE DELETE it when you are finished. If left in your record, it will cause incorrect information and statistics to be calculated, reducing the usefulness of your record. To Delete a score, Sign In as if to enter a score, highlight the score concerned in the orange box, and click to 'Delete Score' button below. Check that it is the score you wish the delete and confirm by clicking the "Delete Score" button below the score displayed. Email me on . . . greg@goforgolf.com . . . and I will help you with any problems you may have with registering and entering your scorecards and courses. REMEMBER the more scorecards you enter, the better the analysis you will receive from GoforGOLF. __________________________________________________________ *** SUGGESTIONS, QUESTIONS & COMMENTS Suggestions, questions and comments are welcomed.
