Newsletter Number 76 from GoforGOLF ************************************************************************ Now in our 7TH YEAR with over 35,000 scorecards entered and courses from over 53 countries . . . and growing by the day. WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE CREATED THIS GOLFING ENVIRONMENT . . . ************************************************************************ IN THIS ISSUE *** Some Superb Golf *** Competition Winner *** Holes in One and Eagles *** WIN ONE Dozen Premium Golf Balls *** HandiTIPS *** More Golf & Sports Links *** Swing Key ************************************************************************ *** SOME SUPERB GOLF The Presidents Cup and the Solhiem Cup have been and gone with some fantastic golf and international competition. The competition was fierce in the Solhiem Cup with teams tied going into the final day . . The USA team finally coming through with a 15 1/2 to 12 1/2 win over the Europeans. In a mirror situation in the Presidents Cup, the teams were tied with just the singles to finish. The USA showed their depth to take the win on the last day, with Lenard, Toms, Perry, Furyk, DiMarco and my favourite Couples all winning. For the International Team, Retief Goosen beat Tiger Woods, and Michael Campbell beat Fred Funk. Now, of course, Tiger Woods has again indicated he is through the rejigging of his swing, and ready to create a few more records, with his British Open win, followed up with the latest WGC-American Express Championship, again coming from behind to pick up the win. It was heart warming to see the genuine feeling of Tiger, when John Daley missed the short putt to miss out on going to the 3rd playoff hole. Tiger expressed "I feel so bad for JD he played beautifully all week. You never want to win that way. I was fortunate just to be in the playoff" . . . It was genuine. .......... I have to conclude with another comment about Michael Campbell You will have noticed his photo on the front page of GoforGOLF since his US Open win. You will have also noticed his record since the US Open, a very credible record for a Maori boy from Titahi Bay. Well Done Michael Campbell, we look forward to seeing you continue your new confidence. .......... And did you celebrate Tigers FIRST wedding anniversary ?? .......... I do invite and encourage you to send me your views on my comments to email greg@goforgolf.com Greg Paul *** For an update on Ernie Els' knee injury go to his website http://www.ernieels.com/ __________________________________________________________ *** SEPTEMBER COMPETITION The winner of the September ** Spot the Ball ** is Bruce Phillipps of Otaki, New Zealand. Your golf balls are on their way to you. The winning position was d 6. See below for details of the OCTOBER Spot the Ball Contest. __________________________________________________________ *** HOLES IN ONE and EAGLES Some of EAGLES in September: 3rd Sep Whitford Park Country Club 18th White Tee 8th Sep Pine Ridge Golf Club 9th Yellow Tee 18th Sep Castlecliff Golf Club 3rd White Tee 29th Sep Waikanae Golf Club 16th White Tee Bruce Phillipps 29th Sep Tenterfield Golf Club 8th White Tee Yes, Bruce has had a luck month, winning the Spot the Ball and scoring and Eagle. Bruce tells us . . . "The 16th at Waikanae is a sharp dog-leg par 4, quite short requiring accuracy. I chose to use my 2-iron (a somewhat unfashionable club in this era of utility clubs) and hit a long straight drive which finished in perfect position just past the corner of the dog-leg. My pitch and run was on line all the way. Even the core holes and sand weren't going to stop this shot and with its last gasp the ball fell into the hole!". Well done Bruce. Congratulations to all successful GoforGOLFers. (Our promise of confidentiality does not allow us to publish your names, without your permission - let us know if you make a hole in one, eagle or albatross). _________________________________________________________ *** OCTOBER COMPETITION The prize is sponsored by the NZ Golf Magazine ONE Dozen Premium Brand Golf Balls " SPOT the BALL " To enter the contest, enter the coordinates of the position you think the ball is. When entering a new course into GoforGOLF the term 'Stroke' is often missinterpreted as your first score. However, it is necessary to enter the course, before you are able to enter your score. The term 'Stroke' refers to 'Stroke Index' which is often referred to as 'Handicap' on many scorecards. This is the rating of the hole between 1 and 18, where 1 is the hardest hole, and 18 is the easiest. Each hole must have a unique stroke. Don't get this confused with PAR, also know as Par Rating, which is the number a shots a zero handicap player is expected to take on that hole, usually 3, 4 or 5. 3. CIRCLED Scores Similarly, there is often confusion over the Circled Score function. A circled score takes place when you pick up your ball before completing the hole. Etiquette - If playing a friendly game, it is considered good etiquette to pick up your ball if you have strayed, so that you do not hold up the groups behind. In my country, when you pick up your ball on a hole, you normally enter a circled or adjusted score, for handicapping purposes. (The adjusted score entered is the score based on your handicap and the rating of the particular hole, that you would have needed to score to obtain one stableford point, while you actually receive zero stableford points). In GoforGOLF I suggest you enter an estimated score for the hole. An estimate of what you might have scored if you had continued. This is so that your score record is completed. Then tick the 'Circle' box for the hole when entering your score. GoforGOLF will then include zero stableford points, and calculate your 'corrected' score as stated above. It is this 'corrected score' that is used for handicapping purposes. (Remember . . . don't pick up your ball if you are competing in an official stroke play competition). REMEMBER the more scorecards you enter, the better the analysis you will receive from GoforGOLF. __________________________________________________________ *** NEW ZEALAND GOLF MAGAZINE We continue in our endeavours to develop and improve the GOLF Magazine.
