2005 New Zealand Open Golf Tournament Photos and News

Part of the GoforGOLF CHIPS Photo Gallery

The Photos below are from the 2005 NZ Open held at Gulf Harbour Country Club, Auckland, New Zealand, February 2005.
We hope you enjoy them.
Click on any thumbnail photo to see it at FULL SIZE.

Start at the Finish - I thought the first photo should show the 18th and final hole.

Welcome to my First Day coverage of the 2005 Holden N Z Open.

Having thought I had a great series of photos of the top couple of groups I found an error on my camera. Hope I will be able to recover the photos, in which case I will update these First Day photos.

Enjoy those I did get . . . and the next 3 days

Satrt at the Finish
The View -What a View - How can you concentrate on the golf when you have such a view

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The View
My Bunker Shot - Those that know me will know my day is not complete without a bunker shot or two. Not many to be seen today - but I did get this one on the 16th - Take a note of the position of the ball - It may be the next Spot the Ball

Photos by: GoforGOLF

My Bunker Shot
A New Name - Jarrod Lyall, a new name from Australia, and just from a great Heineken Classic, tees off on the 9th

Photos by: GoforGOLF

A New Name
Just Like this One - I just Like this photo, taken on the 16th green, Rangitoto Island in the background

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Just Like this One
The 17th Tee - One of the many demanding tee shots on this course. A huge gully immediately in front of the tee, and small undulating fairway to hit in the distance.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The 17th Tee
What a Tee Position - What a tee position, jutting out into the Hauraki Gulf.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

What a Tee Position
What a View - Ooops, it looks like I have only seen a small amount of the course, and yes you are right.

The 14th through to 17th hole are spectacular, and I was determined to get the photos while the weather was co-operating to the fullest.

I will try to cover the rest of the course, the more supperb holes and many of the players over the next three days.

Hope you enjoy my photographic coverage of the 2005 Holden N Z Open

What a View
Day Two - An overcast day so the photos are not quite as crisp as yesterday.

I decided to walk the first 9 holes, the less spectacular, although not less daunting - I am sure you will agree.

Starting on the 9th, as I left the clubhouse, I found Peter Fowler had strayed - click the images to see them full size. off the fairway.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Day Two
Just off the Fairway - Chris Hanell (Swe) also strays but not quite as much.

Nice colour coordinated outfit. Orange belt, with matching orange Nike symbol on his cap, his shirt, and even his matching black golf shoes.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Just off the Fairway
Nick O'Hern - And then, fresh from a play off in the Heineken Class in Australia, Nick O'Hern is having a difficult day.

On the 8th tee, Nick is watched by Nick Dougherty and Defending Champion Terry Price.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Nick O'Hern
Another Great View - Ricky Schmidt (Aus) putts on the 6th with the Gulf Harbour Marina Estate in the background.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Another Great View
N Z Amateur - Riki Kauika, one of the New Zealand amateurs tees off on the 6th.

I think Riki and the other kiwi amateurs found the competition a bit tough, but, put in a creditable performance, and what a great experience.

I'll be looking for their names in the future.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

N Z Amateur
A Blind Tee Shot - Gareth Paddison (NZ) gives it everything on the blind 5th hole tee shot

Gareth split the fairway to the applause of all the spectators.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

A Blind Tee Shot
MY BUNKER SHOT - Emanuele Canonica (Italy) supplies me with my required one bunker shot per days photographing

- Thanks Emanuele - it wasn't just a great photo by me . . . . BUT, Emanuele hit the flag with his chip shot then sunk his putt . . .What a Great SAVE

You can see Gareth Paddison and his group on the 5th fairway - look at those bunkers.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Bunker Shot
Its All Down Hill - First round leader Steven Bowditch (Aus) tees off on the wonderfull huge down hill 4th hole

- as the rain starts to approach . . .

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Its All Down Hill
Final Shot Today - My final good photo of the day is of Stephen Scahill (NZ) on the par 3 3rd.

. . . .

I am sure you have worked out by now that I walked the front 9 "backwards".

Just click on the photos for full size images - from the bottom of this page to the top to get an impression hole by hole,
(except for the 1st couple of photos on the 9th hole, leave those until the last).

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Stephen Scahill
Another Bunker Shot - Peter Senior (Aus) gives me my Daily bunker shot on the 17th.

The ball already on the green is from a great shot of Costantino Rocca who hit his approach shot from the rough, and sunk his putt for a saved Par.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Another Bunker Shot
The View - The view is just as good although the day has produced a brisk westerly wind causing many problems - Here Barry Cheeseman (USA) hits his approach to the 17th.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The View
The 16th Tee Shot - Peter O'Malley launches his tee shot over the ravene of the 16th into the middle of the fairway.

Click the shot for an enlarged shot, then, IF you look closely you can see the projection of the ball, but also the tee in the air, (just below the club head and slightly to the right).

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The 16th Tee Shot
Hit it into the Water - Kenneth Ferrie (Eng) tees it up on the Par 3 15th - Well bunkered and with the Hauraki Gulf as a back drop

- Kenneth's shot was great finishing within 4 feet of the hole - look at the view . . . not the stroke.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Hit it into the Water
Great Guy - Craig Parry powers it off the tee on the same 14th.

I had to include this one, as "Popeye" is lining himself up to attack the lead on the final day.

Just look at the power he is creating.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Great Guy
Only 417 metres Yeah - The same 14th hole.

This is the best photo I have taken that shows the drop from the Tee and then the climb back up to the green. Looks easy at 417 metres.

I am told that Italian Emanuele Canonica hit a 5 iron off the tee to land just short of the bunkers, whereas most were hitting 5 woods . . .

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Only 417 metres Yeah
A Short Par 4 - Only 285 metres (312 yards) this is an easy/difficult hole. While the green is large, it is wide and definitely not deep.

Marcus Cain (Aus) takes it on with the big drop on the tee, then a very elevated green. Drivable with a good tail wind . . . not today.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

A Short Par 4
Go Kiwi - Leading Kiwi Steve Alker works on his chip shot on the 11th.

I can tell you the chip shot ran past the flag and ran into the fringe.

And then Steve sunk the putt from about 18 feet.

Go Kiwi
Some Trouble - Simon Nash (Aus), starting the day in 4th, and challenging for the lead, runs into a problem on the 10th.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Some Trouble
The Rules - Simon discusses the situation with the 'Rule Official'

- Options are: . . . play it as it lies, with relief from the cable

(If the ball moves when you move the cable, you have to replace the ball),

or take relief, (1 stroke penalty I believe), closest relief then one club length.

That put Simon in the bushes, so he chose to play it, with his putter, hitting it up the path.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The Rules
A Delicate Move - Simon carefully moves the cables

- I missed his putt, as the TV crew climbed in and walked straight in front of me at that very moment . . .

Photos by: GoforGOLF

A Delicate Move
Recovery Shot - Still I did get his 3rd shot,

from over the heads of all the spectators that had gathered.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Recovery Shot
The Leader - In the meantime, I caught the approach shot of Oliver Wilson (Eng), who went on to lead the tournament after the third round.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The leader
My First Shot of the Final Day - Matthew Ecob (Aus) hits his final tee shot of the tournament off the 18th.

The day is a little overcast, but the wind has died some, while still being in the face of those on the 18th Tee.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

My First Shot of the Day
Quiet Please - Peter Hedblom (Swe) putts on the 17th green - this is to remind you of the incredible views on these last few holes.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Quiet Please
Giving it ALL - Nathan Green gives it ALL on his last tee shot nearly falling over.

The resulting shot was still down the middle of the fairway . . . and a lot of laughter between the players and caddies.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Giving it ALL
Oooh My Bunker Shot - Rick Schmidt (Aus) gives me my daily bunker shot

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Oooh My Bunker Shot
Great Tee Shot - A Great tee shot by Stephen Scahill off the 17th, watched by Paul Sheehan (Aus)

I think this is my best photo of the tournament . . .

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Great Tee Shot
A Chip Shot - Brett Rumfort chips back to the 10th green after over hitting his approach. The 11th fairway is in the background.

This is worth clicking to see the full size image . . . I caught the ball in mid air.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

A Chip Shot
Another Birdie - Miles Tunnicliff (Eng) sinks his birdie putt on the 10th . . . to go to -19

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Another Birdie
The Leaderboard - I return to the clubhouse area and the 18th, for a rest and a "Snapper Roll" snack. Yes a "Snapper Roll", and it was very tastie . . . and of course to check out the leaderboard.

The two front runners were emerging, and it soon become much closer.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The leaderboard
Determined - A determined Niclas Fasth acknowledges the crowd as he walks onto the 18th green - for the first time today.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

Determined
One Shot Behind - One shot behind, Miles Tunnicliff hits his approach shot to the 18th

With the volunteers and crowd following him down the 18th fairway.

Photos by: GoforGOLF

One Shot Behind
"It's IN - It's IN" - Englishman Tunnicliff punches the air as he sinks his putt for a birdie and to force a play off

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The Chip Shot - The first play off hole, the 18th

- After his ball deflects off a young girl in the crowd, Miles gets a free drop, and chips within a few feet to half the hole

And a second play off hole . . .

(The young girl that was hit by Tunnicliff's ball is understood to have recovered after some attendence by the wonderful St Johns attendants).

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The Chip Shot
Second Play Off Hole - Miles Tunnicliff's ball looks very close, but he just misses the putt.

Second Play Off Hole
Yahoo !!! - Niclas Fasth sinks his putt for the WIN . . .

The Trophy - Niclas Fasth hoists the trophy over his head

Photos by: GoforGOLF

The Trophy
Traditional - Yes, I finish with the traditional photo shot for the gathered photographers, including me from GoforGOLF.

I hope I have captured some of the excitement of the last day and particularly the two incredible playoff holes.
